Samaritan’s Purse mobilizes and equips thousands of volunteers to provide emergency aid to U.S. victims of wildfires, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters thru the North American Ministries (NAM) Department.. The Assistant Program Manager, based in North Wilkesboro, NC, serves to support and help implement plans designed to further the ministry of the Samaritan’s Purse Disaster Relief Program with specific responsibility for assisting with the recruitment and development of volunteer teams; shepherding and providing training for volunteers; recruiting churches to participate in the project, and responding to disasters as requested.

A day in the life of an Assistant Program Manager, Disaster Relief:

In the role of Assistant Program Manager, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Maintain your personal relationship with Jesus Christ and be an effective witness for Him
  • Assist the Program Manager of U.S. Disaster Relief in developing church relationships and implementing a volunteer training plan, and training volunteers.
  • In deployment times, serve to support the Program Manager serving as the incident commander in the Incident Command System model of emergency response
  • Work to establish communication with Government Agencies and other Relief Organizations
  • While on response, oversee designated aspects of the deployment in direction of key volunteers, other staff, and chaplains with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association Rapid Response Team; requiring hands-on leadership with teams in the field
  • Ensure safety/training procedures are being carried out
  • Provides procurement and logistical support for deployments
  • Assist with financial transactions: prepare daily/monthly report of activities; hold/attend regular weekly staff meetings
  • Assist the Program Manager to set up programs, work with identified church partners, interact with the local emergency management officials, organize, train, and direct volunteers
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Ability to obtain a Class A restricted driver’s license and a valid Department of Transportation Medical Card
  • Working knowledge of general construction and general chainsaw use
  • General knowledge of Excel and Word, and ability to learn in-house specialized computer applications
  • Highly effective communication skills including written and public speaking
  • Ability to work well under pressure in difficult situations with limited resources 
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing conditions
  • Ability to build and maintain an effective team with ever-changing people 
  • Ability to do the work asked of our volunteers 
  • Ability to use given data and statistics to determine volunteer needs, length of deployment, and forecasting completion dates
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university and two (2) to three (3) years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Twelve credit hours of college-level Biblical Studies
