A day in the life of a Global Technical Advisor, Protection

At Samaritan’s Purse, the Gospel really is the center of all we do!  We start each day with a time of devotions and prayer. We hear from members of our staff, both from IHQ and our global offices, as well as special guest speakers who encourage us in God’s word. We then join together to pray for one another, as well as praying for staff and volunteers who serve around the globe. We get paid to start each day this way! 

Job Duties

  • Supports Field Staff.
    • Oversees knowledge sharing across Protection teams, and in coordination with other sectors. Ensures monitoring and evaluation results are understood and used to improve programming.
    • Advises on the technical design and implementation of field projects, and provides assessments and reports of current efforts. Works with field staff to mainstream appropriate women’s issues and integrate spiritual aspects into interventions.
    • Disseminates evidence-based programming concepts, guidance, tools, technical papers, standards, and frameworks regarding issues facing women at risk.
    • Supports disaster relief efforts, including serving on the Incident Management Team (IMT) or deploying on Disaster Assistance Response Teams (DARTs), as directed.
  • Maintains Global Relevancy.
    • Maintains global relevancy in the sector and represents Samaritan’s Purse at Protection-related or donor events. Actively pursues grant and funding opportunities in current fields.
    • Actively develops professional knowledge and skills to stay current of global trends in the Protection sector.
    • Ensures consistency amongst global Protection initiatives and with Samaritan’s Purse’s overall strategies.
  • Ensuring High Quality Program Design and Implementation.
    • Conducts regular visits to the field offices to consult with field managers and senior field staff, as requested.
    • Ensures International best practices and Samaritan’s Purse policies are applied in the work with displaced populations and with women and children, in particular.
    • Develops and maintains best practices and training resources in the Protection sector.
    • Provides technical guidance and review of programming funding proposals, assessments, and surveys related to women at risk as well as broader Protection themes.
    • Assists in interviewing select qualified candidates to fill open positions in the field as requested by regional and country leadership teams.
  • Ensures that our programs targeting women at risk are consistent with Samaritan’s Purse core Christian values, and are making an appropriate Christ-centered contribution to the work of the international community amongst the world’s hurting peoples.
  • Follows policies and procedures of Samaritan’s Purse as set forth in the Policy Manual.
  • Maintains a strong Christian witness to colleagues, vendors, charitable beneficiaries, and the general public.
  • Attends daily morning devotions and participates in prayer support for the ministry, donors and volunteers.
  • Other duties may be assigned that are not specifically identified within the content of the job description.

In the role of Protection Global Technical Advisor, you will be responsible for integrating and mainstreaming protection considerations across sectors into the design, proposal, execution, evaluation, and reporting of all projects.  This position will specifically focus on ensuring that protection interventions regarding women and vulnerable populations are of a high technical quality, that monitoring processes are in place, and that program quality and relevance are assessed. Priority support areas will include disaster relief interventions, capacity building of Samaritan’s Purse staff, and program design. Global Technical Advisors (GTAs) provide technical leadership to the country offices of Samaritan’s Purse around the world. Requires international and/or domestic travel up to 30% of the year.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A personal, vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ and desire to continue being an active, consistent witness for Him.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Women’s Studies, International Relations, Humanitarian Assistance, Protection, or related field of study.
  • 5-10 years related experience and/or training (required).
  • Twelve credit hours of college-level Biblical Studies (preferred).
  • Significant international experience. Demonstrated success in cross-cultural communication and ministries (preferred).
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations in English.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and ability to work with a diverse team in a pressured environment.
  • Proven ability to work creatively and independently. A strong team player and adept at creating a strong team spirit.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams across the organization.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office software, including Word, Excel and Outlook is required.
  • Ability to travel and work in difficult conditions under pressure. Requires international and/or domestic travel up to 30% of the year.

Type (Full-Time/Part-Time/Associate): Full-Time

Language Requirement: Fluency in English (required) / Knowledge of Foreign Languages (especially French and/or Spanish) (preferred)

Travel Expectations: Ability to travel. Requires international and/or domestic travel up to 30% of the year. Maintaining required travel documents and vaccinations for entry into foreign countries will be necessary.
