A day in the life of a GIS and Data Specialist

At Samaritan’s Purse, the Gospel really is the center of all we do!  We start each day with a time of devotions and prayer.  We hear from members of our staff, both from IHQ and our global offices, as well a special guest speakers who encourage us in God’s word.  We then join together to prayer for one another, as well as praying for staff and volunteers who serve around the globe.  We get paid to start each day this way! 

Job Duties

  • Maintains a personal, active relationship with Jesus Christ and is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ.
  • Support the Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) deployments, International Projects Department, and Field Offices with data analysis, mobile field data collection, Tableau, and with other innovative solutions.  
  • Administer, maintain, update, and advance the interactive visualization and reporting tools of all Samaritan’s Purse work sectors (i.e. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), shelter, food, medical coordination, and logistics coordination).
  • Assist the Incident Management Team during a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) response, including creation of informational dashboards and access to reports and forms for data collection.  Provide GIS and Mapping support to the Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART).  This includes the following tasks: 
    • Managing response and prioritization requests for map products and services and supporting all activities.
    • Managing the development, quality control, and reproduction of GIS and Data Analysis products.
    • Identifying, gathering and incorporating external datasets into the Samaritan’s Purse (SP) repository. Maintaining and expanding the archives and working with the data to create themes and layers for use in GIS and to create analytical products.
  • Maintain and develop Data Analysis Tools including dashboards, maps, and analytical reports.
  • Create analytical reports providing direct and real-time insight to the Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) roster including but not limited to deployment records, training records, and staffing records.
  • Create analytical reports for International Disaster Response Unit and Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) Response activities accomplished.
  • Continually perform quality control and validation checks on the data collected in technical systems, working with various teams to resolve discrepancies and improve processes.
  • Develop standard protocols, templates, infographics and procedures ensuring the implementation, monitoring, maintenance, and correct functioning of the departments GIS needs.
  • Maintain a system of reports and metrics pertaining to project activity.  Develop and update reports and presentations with current metric information for Regional, Field Office, and International Headquarter Leadership review.  Ensure achievement reports are presentation-ready at all times and users are equipped to use the technology effectively.
  • Recommend software, hardware, and related data reporting items in cooperation with Information Technologies and immediate supervisor.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Maintains a personal, active relationship with Jesus Christ and is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Data Analytics, Computer Science, Mathematics/Statistics, or other fields that have a strong data analysis; or three to five years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Twelve credit hours of college-level Biblical studies strongly preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of and prior experience in using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Tableau strongly preferred.
  • Prior expereince in ArcGIS story maps preferred.
  • Proficiency in M&E and humanitarian context a plus.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and quickly solve problems as they occur.
  • Exceptional internal and external customer service focus.
  • Strong attention to detail.
