A day in the life of a Data Privacy Officer (DPO)

Job Duties

  • Acts as the Data Protection Officer and HIPAA Privacy Officer.
  • Oversees the development, implementation, education, monitoring and continuous improvement of the core components of an effective data privacy program, including but not limited to:
    • privacy-related policies, procedures, and standards
    • robust investigation procedures designed to respond to customer inquiries
    • formal education, training, and communications
    • privacy risk assessment
  • Creates and maintain a data privacy roadmap to ensure the organization proactively establishes capabilities within its application and data platforms to fulfill privacy standards.
  • Performs and oversee initial and periodic information privacy risk assessments, mitigation, and remediation.
  • Provides direction in the implementation of administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect the privacy of personally identifiable information (PII), nonpublic personal information (NPI), and protected health information (PHI).
  • Advises Information Systems department on data management policies, privacy issues, legal compliance, and best practices as assigned.
  • Assists with vendor vetting and create a strategy for vendor onboarding process from a privacy perspective.
  • Serves as information privacy resource to the organization and all departments, regarding release of information for all privacy related issues.
  • Consults with General Counsel regarding new or revised data privacy laws and regulations regarding consumer data privacy to ensure programs and policies are modified accordingly.
  • Consults on privacy and security incidents and data breach investigations as needed.
  • Maintains current knowledge of applicable global, federal, state, and local privacy laws and industry regulations.
  • Monitors external environment to ensure implementation of best practices.
  • Follows policies and procedures of Samaritan’s Purse as set forth in the Policy Manual.
  • Maintains a strong Christian witness to colleagues, vendors, charitable beneficiaries, and the general public.
  • Attends daily morning devotions and participates in prayer support for the ministry, its donors, and volunteers.

In the role of Data Privacy Officer (DPO), you are responsible for compliance with global, federal, and local data protection laws, related regulations, and industry standards, which includes monitoring and adherence to data privacy standards. You will provide oversight and expertise on a full range of domestic and international Privacy policies, programs, and trainings, including managing incident responses. In partnership with information security, technology, and compliance teams, the DPO solves complex privacy problems and minimizes the company’s risk to privacy-related requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A personal, vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ and desire to continue being an active, consistent witness for Him.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Information Assurance, or related technical field with five plus years’ related experience (required).
  • Master’s degree or Juris Doctorate (preferred).
  • Minimum of five (5) years of privacy or related experience (required).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of risk management or related experience (preferred).
  • One or more of the following certifications: IAPP, CIPP, CIPM, or CIPT (required).
  • In-House Counsel experience preferred but not required.
  • Twelve credit hours of college-level Biblical studies strongly preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of key domestic and international data privacy principles and legislation (HIPAA, GDPR, CCPA). Able to adapt quickly to new laws.
  • Understanding of emerging data privacy technologies and concepts.
  • Knowledge of Privacy frameworks (NIST Privacy Framework, ISO 27701:2019, etc.).
  • Knowledge of regulations and laws applicable to consumer privacy (Regulation P, GLBA, COPPA, HIPAA, GDPR, CCPA, etc.).
  • Proven management and leadership experience.
  • Fundamental project management skills.
  • Ability to think critically, quickly, and creatively to develop business solutions that work.
  • Ability to consistently exercise discretion and independent judgement for complex and confidential matters.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure and without direct supervision.
  • Expertise in communicating complex privacy matters to a wide audience with clarity; training experience is a plus.
  • Effective organizational and interpersonal skills including written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to skillfully influence without authority.
  • Strong research, impeccable attention to detail, interpersonal, delegation, and supervisory skills.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and ability to work with a diverse team in a pressured environment.
  • Proven ability to work creatively and independently. A strong team player and adept at creating a strong team spirit.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams across the organization.
